Builders seek enforcement of standards in construction industry

Professional builders under the aegis of Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) have implored all stakeholders to shun sharp practices and adhere to standard of construction.

Speaking with journalists in Lagos on the sidelines of the 2021 Builders’ Day, the Chairman, Lagos chapter, Sunday Wusu, noted that the event was staged to create awareness on existing codes of practice and regulations.

He disclosed that the building regulation in Lagos and the National Building Code (NIOB) stipulated that builders’ document is part of the requirements necessary for building production management.

Wusu said project quality management plan, construction methodology and programmes are vital to successful delivery of building projects.

According to him, the absence of a builder with these documents will be tantamount to working against the law, which is punishable under the state’s building regulation law of 2019.

Wusu explained that people still struggle to differentiate between the role of a builder and an architect in construction, adding that many thinks they perform the same responsibility but the notion isn’right.

He said the relationship between the builder, architect and civil engineer, could be seen in terms of product and training. He urged Nigerians to become more aware on the necessity for building safety, durability and to see the need to engage professional builders and other relevant professionals in the conceptualisation, design and production of building projects.

On her part, the national chairperson, Association of Professional Women Builders of Nigeria (APWBN), Mrs Sikirat Sai’d, advised Nigerians and intending home owners to deploy the services of professional builders in their ptojects and promote inclusion of more women in the industry. She said the association is engaging relevant stakeholders to uptick the involvement of women in the building industry.
